About the Author
Sergio Tinoco was born in Pharr, Texas, and raised in Reynosa, Mexico, before moving to Weslaco, Texas, with his grandparents. Growing up in poverty, he began working as a migrant laborer at age seven. Determined to escape the cycle of farm labor, he enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school, serving ten years with a notable deployment to Bosnia-Herzegovina, where he faced challenges that would later contribute to his PTSD.
After leaving the military, Sergio joined the U.S. Border Patrol, where his Mexican heritage and family ties to South Texas and Mexico created personal conflicts. Despite these challenges, Sergio has remained committed to his work in the Border Patrol, where he continues to serve today, with a total of 29 years of service. Along the way, he earned a master’s degree in organizational management, became a motivational speaker, and writes a column for Homeland Security Today. Sergio’s journey is one of resilience, determination, and a deep commitment to both his country and his community.
It was a self-therapeutic process more than anything else. My mother had just passed away and I needed an outlet to deal with my depression and feelings of guilt. I felt extremely guilty and believed my mother passed away not really knowing her only child (me). The book is a long-winded letter to my mother letting her know of how I saw things growing up as well as the many challenges, obstacles, and mistakes I made.
